At Banner we have a CSR Committee, a team of committed individuals who are responsible for owning, developing, reviewing and evolving our CSR strategy and implementing all the initiatives that come from the strategy. They work hard and we’re proud to have a robust CSR strategy that delivers social value and social impact for our customers, community, suppliers and employees.
The Banner social value programme
Our Social Value Programme enables us to exert the energy, talent, and enthusiasm of our people for the benefit of the wider community.
We donate 1000 hours to local communities!
Every member of staff is given one day a year to support the community – that’s 1,000 hours and counting. Recent volunteering projects include the decoration and cleaning of a new location for Rutland House School for Parents, a pre-school for children with mobility and communication difficulties and the gardening and landscaping of Abbeyfield Care Home grounds.
We also have a partnership with Barnsley Hospice. Our employees are encouraged to attend volunteer days at the Hospice where they perform a variety of jobs in Barnsley Hospice shops or at the Hospice itself.
Our chosen national charity is the Institute of Cancer Research, for whom we have raised in excess of £38,000 since 2007.
We also donate surplus stock to help reduce expenditure for local charities and schools.
And we like to support our customers too! We have been a longstanding sponsor for the Greater Manchester Police charities and many other customer charities.
Recruitment and training
We make a commitment to the following initiatives, to contribute to our local communities and personal welfare:
- Recruitment of local people within our offices and Distribution Centres
- Recruitment of local drivers located throughout the UK and close to our customers locations
- All people employed by Banner will enjoy our robust Training and Development procedures which are accredited to Investors in People. This means that we can actively contribute to the welfare of local people and help them to progress in their chosen career.
- Small Medium Enterprises. We rely on a number of small and medium sized businesses to help us run effectively. Some of these examples are listed below:
- We use local recruitment agencies
- We use local FM companies for site, grounds and building maintenance at all our sites, as well as for catering.
- Our marketing team work with local printers, creative agencies and other marketing service providers.
- School engagement
- We offer work placements across our organisation in different departments to help inspire and educate the next generation whilst demonstrating the benefits of lifelong education. Schools located near to our facilities are offered school placement opportunities.
We know how important they are to our customer and our brand so we invest in this culture by giving everyone the time, communication and training they need to be the best they can be. Every quarter we all get together – a time where we learn, reflect and share best practice and ideas. In addition to this we communicate regularly through monthly update calls, webinars, training programmes and incentive schemes.

It’s very common across many industries that products are sourced from the Far East. However, many factories operating in these areas are not required to comply with UK quality standards.
All suppliers of Banner are therefore required to meet specified minimum environmental, ethical, and quality criteria, which, uniquely within the industry, are independently verified by an external auditor, SGS Group. SGS is an internationally recognised leader in social, ethical, and environmental auditing, verification and certification services, and were the first independent company to be accredited by Social Accountability International (SAI, formerly CEPAA) to deliver SA8000 training.
Tackling modern slavery
We have a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery and we are committed to acting ethically and with integrity in all our business dealings and relationships and to implementing and enforcing effective systems and controls to ensure modern slavery is not taking place anywhere in our own business or in any of our supply chains.
As part of our contracting processes, we include specific prohibitions against the use of forced, compulsory or trafficked labour, or anyone held in slavery or servitude, whether adults or children, and we expect that our suppliers will hold their own suppliers to the same high standards. We evaluate and insist upon supplier conformance with our business values and request that they embrace internationally recognised standards and practice including, but not limited to, the International Labour Convention and the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code.
This is further supported via the completion of supplier questionnaires covering human rights and ethical practices and a formal supplier review process via stringent onsite audits and product assessment.
Health and safety
We are proud to hold the OHSAS18001 accreditation.
Management and employees play a vital role in our health and safety arrangements and all have a legal duty to co-operate in safety related matters, not to endanger themselves or others, or to misuse anything provided for safety. Compliance with our safety procedures is a condition of employment.
